Feastcraft: Mise en Place

Steam and stage lights slice through market fog as a streamer-chef faces a public finals where a manipulative market module threatens to herd taste. Under the glow of drones and the off-key cheer of singing muffins, he opts to perform a risky culinary Reset—an exacting, physical counter that leans on skill, timing, and mentorship rather than shortcuts.

Steam fogged the low ceiling of Eli’s practice pod and painted the HUD a soft orange. He kept his hands moving because if he stopped the rhythm fell out of him like a dropped tray—chop, toss, press, and the pan answered with an obedient sizzle. The tutorial match glitched into a crowd simulation: five booth NPCs, a wandering critic with an oversized beret, and a gaggle of players in cheap cosplay who clapped on cue. Eli tightened his wrist and leaned into Thermal Sync, feeling the latency in the left burner hum into place.

Argos, the spoon clipped to his apron by a stubborn magnet, cleared a throat that sounded suspiciously like a wooden spoon trying on a show tune. "If you flambé that like you're shaving the sun, we will have fireworks and a complaint from market security. Prime the cool lads, will you?"

Eli smirked and flicked a lemon wedge at the spoon. "Shut up, Argos. You're heavier than your advice suggests."

Argos clanged with the response, a petty metronome. "Heavy? I am seasoned. It's a pun."

The Giggleroot sample on the prep table—an absurd, neon root sold at the exotic-ingredient stalls—trembled like a tiny laughing ember. When Eli grated a sliver into the roux it sent a ripple through the NPCs: a polite snort shifted into an unexpected giggle on every palate reading. He had hired Giggleroot for sensory practice; it taught volatility by making patron reactions unpredictable. A dozen UI bubbles popped: Flavor Weave +1, Palate Meter: slight fluctuation, Audience Engagement: amused.

Around the market, unrelated life throbbed along. A vendor across the lane—old Mrs. Bellows—twined sugar into twirling cones while humming a local tune that always used the minor seventh in the wrong place, which everyone considered charming. Overhead, the municipal drones released a scatter of scented paper confetti because it was Tuesday and someone in the city’s events office liked variety. It had nothing to do with the competition; the paper confetti smelled faintly of citrus and old recipes and made the whole scene feel like a holiday even if Eli was trying to be professional.

He slid the pan, snapping the base so the sauce hit the oil and shimmered. Skill cooldowns ticked along his HUD like polite metronomes: Speed Hands 2s, Flavor Weave 6s, Thermal Sync 10s. He chopped a tuft of green and folded it into the sauce exactly when Flavor Weave recycled. The HUD rewarded him with a bright notch and the crowd simulation bunched toward his stall's gossip thread.
